Drakes Roll Past Sturgeon 18-8

June 1 2023 The Marysville Drakes defeated the Martinez Sturgeon 18-8 after collecting 16 hits and scoring in seven of nine innings. Marysville erased an early 1-0 deficit with three runs in the second and three more in the third, then broke the game open with six runs in the fifth. The Drakes added a run in the sixth and two each in the seventh and eighth. Martinez scored twice in the sixth, three times in the seventh and twice in the eighth, but could not close the gap.

Joseph Starick led Marysville with two home runs, two hits and six RBI. Michael Vochelli added a home run and three RBI, while Evan Blum went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and one RBI. Lyndon Weaver had two hits and two RBI, and Erik Mitchell collected three hits. Marysville also received three hits from its pitching staff, including three RBI from Vochelli.

Vochelli earned the win after allowing five hits and three earned runs in six innings. He walked four and struck out nine. Tyler Carpenter followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings and two strikeouts, while Mike Stellmack and Declan Peterson also pitched in relief.

Brady Bibbs took the loss for Martinez after surrendering 13 hits and 13 runs in 4 2/3 innings, with 12 runs earned. Eric Whitfield went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI for the Sturgeon, while Nick Adgar also homered and drove in two runs. Martinez finished with nine hits in the loss.
