Martinez Sturgeon Rally Past Marysville Drakes 18-8

May 30 2023 The Martinez Sturgeon defeated the Marysville Drakes 18-8 at Waterfront Park, overcoming an early deficit with a nine-run fifth inning. Martinez finished with 16 hits and scored twice in the first, once in the second, three times in the third, once in the fourth, nine times in the fifth and twice in the seventh. Marysville collected seven hits and scored in each of the first five innings, including a three-run fourth, but was held scoreless over the final four innings.

Luke Johnson led Martinez with three hits, three runs, three RBIs and two walks. Cain Agis had two hits and three RBIs, while Eric Whitfield went 3-for-6 with two runs and an RBI. Paul Carreno scored three times and drove in three runs, and Martin Rosas added two hits, two runs and two RBIs. For Marysville, Joseph Starick went 4-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Drake Ayala scored twice and drew three walks, while Evan Blum and Erik Mitchell each drove in a run.

Harrison Aiken earned the win for Martinez after allowing three hits and one earned run in five innings. He walked four and struck out nine. Colt Powledge started for the Sturgeon and worked four innings, allowing four hits and seven runs, six earned, with five walks and seven strikeouts.

Evan Nakagawa took the loss for Marysville after surrendering nine hits and seven earned runs in four innings. Mike Stellmack was charged with eight runs, six earned, without recording an out, and Carson Stephens followed with three runs, two earned, in three innings. Tim Nichols finished with a scoreless inning and two strikeouts.
